Questions About Dubai Travel Tips

Laura asks…

People who Smoke like a train,How do you Travel on Planes?????TIPS please?

im 20,heavy smoker and im in india on vacation atm....i am travelling to dubai in 3 days...and i have no idea what to do? i mean i know lighters are not allowed on plane and all and they get confiscated at the customs?
so what do i do? please help me out..i have a halt and i have to change planes with a gap of 8 hours at the airport...which i cant leave-- any tips? can i take a carton of cigarette with me?

admin answers:

You can take cigs with you just not smoke on the plane! Airports in places like that always have smoking areas so its just the flight you have to last.. Use nicorette gum it doesnt taste too hideous and does the trick, im trying to stop at the mo and using them nearly all the time instead of cigs..

Also you can bring a lighter on a plane, just tuck it away in your hand luggage, i just came through the airport the other day from spain with 2 in my pocket, out there and back and put them in the tray and nobody took them off me.. Plus if they do you can buy one or ask someone at the airport!

Also just have a few drinks on the plane and go to sleep! Also if your in india im sure they have some pretty potent sleeping tablets in the chemists there, i got some from thailand and was asleep before we took off, then didnt wake up til we landed in oz!

William asks…

Travel tips for South eastern Europe? Going this month(it will be autumn)?

I'm going to South eastern Europe for about 2 weeks, and I'm going to Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia. Are there any tips for traveling there? What is the weather like in autumn? Will it be fine wearing shorts and a t-shirt,but of course bring a jacket along? And is it also safe?

I am also stopping over at Dubai for a few hours, in the airport, and wondering, what can you do there? Is shopping there for clothes cheap(say like roxy?etc)and do they have rules like not wearing too revealing stuff?Like is it okay if I wear shorts to stop over there?

admin answers:

2 weeks is far too short to visit 5 countries! There is quite a distance between Germany and Bosnia and if you're travelling by train or car you're going to spend quite a lot of time travelling - and there is a mountain range to cross. And even more if you need to do a return trip back to Germany.

There is so much to see in all of those countries. A personal favourite of mine was a weekend in Ljubljana followed by a train journey to Zagreb where we picked up a car for a 2 week road trip through Northern Croatia and along the coast (don't miss Split and Dubrovnik) with a day trip to Mostar in Bosnia & Herzegovina. But that doesn't even touch Germany and Austria which are big countries...

I agree that autumn will be mild. You may get warm days, but you're definitely going to need long trousers / jeans and a warm long sleeved jacket. All are safe assuming you take the usual traveller precautions (don't flash your money around, be sensible with expensive cameras and don't hang about railway stations late at night). I'm from London and would behave in the rest of Europe as I do here!

I worked in Dubai for 3 months a couple of years ago. I don't remember anything particularly memorable about the airport. It's a pretty standard airport. Clothes shopping isn't cheap. You will see a varied mix of people in full arab dress versus tourists in shorts. Personally I would err on the side of conservative (not shorts or exposed shoulders) although most Emiratis wouldn't pass comment.

Paul asks…

we ( me and life partner ) indians, planning to go on a tour to thailand ( bangkok - pattaya)..any tips ?

any travel tips? no-go zones/bars ? coz i heard all indians are painted with the same brush as stingy, rude etc..well i wud like to say we are different, more liberal / openminded..coz we travelled a bit ( been to uk, switzerland, dubai )..

admin answers:

Yes, they are painted the same, but are not all the same - - and to avoid that trap, - - quite simply, don't be rude [ act superior which everyone here sees through and wonders why] - don't walk around being pushy and arrogant -- be polite and considerate.

On the positive side - - if you present a gentle and mild side, smile first and often, be friendly, I am pretty sure you will have that returned - of course, in Pattaya, that is where your countrymen go and behave the poorest - - but if you emphasize the friendly and kindness inside of you, I think you will do fine and be judged individually - -

good luck and have a nice time

What are the top ten things to do in Dubai?

I am travelling to Dubai for one week at the end of July. I want as much information as possible about the best things to do and see in Dubai.

I would also be grateful for any other tips, as well as names of the best (reasonably priced) shopping areas. Is there any place where I can get a bargain, like fake designer stuff etc?

Is there anything I need to be warned about? Any traveller safety tips etc? I would be most grateful if you could share your experiences of Dubai. Also, if there is any reasonably priced FOUR star hotel that you could recommend, I would appreciate it if u could let me know the name and address.

Many thanks.

Dubai is one of the most safest places in the world. Ofcourse you should not be careless, but no criminality to be afraid about.

You can walk around as a tourist in shorts in most places, but be aware that it is a Moslim country and that you should respect the locals by keeping your clothing decent outside the swimming pool and beach area.

Bargains and fakes you will find in Karama. See this map of Dubai with distances: http://www.startpagedubai.com/maps/Dubai-map-with-distances-in-km.htm

Shopping Malls are a nice way to escape the heat and have a lunch while watching people. IBN Batutta Mall is very special for the design, you feel you walk through little streets. Mall of the Emirates is big and has the indoor SkiDome.... Is a must see. Dubai Festival City is the latest new Mall, I personally like the design of the mall inside (lots of light and space to walk), but I specially like the Canal Walk area with restaurants and live music outside. See the Mall websites: http://www.startpagedubai.com/shopping.htm#Shopping%20Malls

Other must do things:

Desert Safari: http://www.startpagedubai.com/Desert-Safari.htm

Creek Dinner Cruise: http://www.startpagedubai.com/Creek-Dinner-Cruise.htm

Dubai Tourist to Do List: http://www.startpagedubai.com/#To-do-Dubai-for-Tourist

Take an Abra to cross the Creek and visit the Textile Souk and Gold Souk in one trip. Visit the Madinat Jumeirah indoor Souk & waterside restaurants. Eat at the residents favorite Barasti Bar or the Bussola at Le Meridien Mina Seyahi with a view on the Palm under construction. Sit outside in Dubai Marina, enjoy a Lebanese Meze platter and listen to the water fountain that makes a sound of 'waves rolling onto the beach'.
