Sharon asks…

Have you heard that Dubai has been rumored to be the new home of Karl Rove & future retreat of Bush & Cheney?

Tucked far, far away, this Shangrila is the playground of the super-wealthy. They plan to have it all completed by 2011, well before the predicted "end of the world" in 2012. WWIII will not touch Dubai, so they say....here are some photos. What do you think?

Sandra asks…

How did Dubai become so rich?

As many of you may know, Dubai is building & planning many large scale developments such as the Burj Al Arab, The Palm Islands & the soon-to-be- tallest building in the world, The Burj Dubai.
I recently discovered that they are also building the world's largest bridge & fountain, but i'm not sure how they make so much money when many claim that they don't rely on oil.

It all started with Petro dollars. Although Dubai's (which is in the UAE, not Saudi as someone else has suggested) oil reserves are dwindling they still have a fair amount. However, they have seen that the oil will not last forever so have heavily expanded into tourism, they are also the hub for most mid-east oil contractors and service companies. As such they have a large ex-pat population. They still practise conservitive laws and traditions, however they are somewhat relaxed. The UAE is not Saudi, and women do have rights and have the choice of whether they wear traditional dress or not. One thing about Dubai, it used to be a bit expensive and that helped keep the riff raff out, but recently there have been a spate of typical trailer trash crimes in UAE, sex on beaches, drunk and disorderly conduct, fighting on airplanes, etc. Dubai has recently had a huge building boom, and everyone is making a profit, so they keep building. One thing to remember as well is "it takes money to make money" They have LOTS of money, and "the more you have the more you make". So they still have petro-dollars coming in, but don't rely nearly as much on them as they used to. They labour they have is also what the west would consider as cheap, but it is far from slavery, they pay better than the workers home industry, on average 3 times the wage. So it is attractive for workers mainly from Asian countries to flock there to work as labourers. Some employers have less than respectable working and living conditions for their workers but on average they are ok. Dubai is a really nice place, and celebrates it's culture, history and heritage, and so long as you have a little self-disipline and act like a human and not an animal you will have a really good time. A few other nice places to visit would be Abu Dhabi, Doha, and Bahrain.
