Steven asks…

planning to stop over in phuket?

my fiance & i are planning to stop over in phuket from dubai before going home to the philippines. we'll be travelling on a budget and staying for 2 nights or so. need your advice on where to stay, how to book, what sights to see, and more importantly, a rough estimate of the cost in baht. we've been to boracay many times and we're looking for accomodation in phuket that's similar to...la carmela, ban's, orchid (clean, not so ritzy, but has to have air-conditioning)...hotels like that...

thank you in advance!

Mandy asks…

budget hotels in the UAE - are there any?

I'm a great believer in doing things cheap.

I'm used to spending between no more than 30 USD on a place to sleep per night. I know the UAE is not cheap, but would it be possible to find a place to stay in this range? Taking into account that am female travelling alone and thus cannot stay at whatever places male migrant workers from India or Pakistan hang out?

I'm looking at doing a stopover between flights. I'll most likely fly either via Bahrain, Sharjah or Dubai. Since the stopover is my own choice I have to pay for the hotel, thus I would be grateful for any hints.

Also, how is public transport? I know it is not that good, but is it possible to get around without a car? Do I need to take a taxi to get from A to B? Are there shared taxis and minibuses? How are the prices compared to say India, Iran or Egypt?

admin answers:

For US$30, not likely... $100 - $150 is the minimum, at best. The best deal I know of are either the Palm Hotel or Holiday Inn Select in Jebel Ali at Dhs 400 - 600/ per night. That area is VERY safe and near shopping / things to do, if a bit far from Dubai airport (30 - 45 minutes by taxi). Those are the safest. If you transit Sharjah, not a lot around there (airport), though the hotels are cheaper. Taxis are cheap... Use them. Busses are infrequent, and unless you know the area, difficult to use except the ones between cities (eg... Dubai to AUH).

Ruth asks…

Which area (beach) & specific hotel(s) are best for a 26 yr old single FIRST TIMER in GOA, India?

I am flying from the US to India on vacation and decided to stay for a weekend in Goa (2nd week of Oct). Have always tried to go there for the past 6 years but couldn't make it.
I love to party, eat, club and flirt with chicks (i am still single :P)...I am very used to the bikini ambiance and would like something similar on those lines (western/foreign culture). I traveled to Canada, Brazil, Dubai and I know Goa is also very good in all these aspects.

Looking for a medium budget oriented trip and nothing TOO fancy (at the same time NOT CHEAP at all). Would rather spend more $$ on alcohol & lovely Indian food but if the hotel is worth it, that's fine.

Please advice as I have looked at so many websites that I am lost right now...(also north vs south goa)
Also, is there any Swine Flu going around in Goa? Pune which is not far is badly hit. Should I worry about it?

admin answers:

U know that taj hotels have 3 hotels there and right now the prices are like 50% lower so u will pay less for the same room.
I would say check travelocity and try near beach, though in goa there are two areas, like north goa and south goa, south one is more croweded and lively and north goa,the honeymoon type.
Get it?
SO check there.
