Being a black male in Dubai?

I'm thinking of traveling to Dubai, but am curious as to how being an American black male I'll be received? I've traveled to many countries and have never had a problem before, but I know the middle East is a different place all together. I'll be alone, with a very limited understanding of the language. This trip is just for fun, and my own sense of adventure. Thanks in advance for your help!

admin answers:

Dubai is the world commercial centre. You will feel completely at home in fact more at home than you would feel in the U.S. If you catch my drift...

What is the Arabic sign for love?

My boyfriend traveled to Dubai a couple years ago, and he studied the Arabic language. For Christmas, I want to paint him a picture of the Arabic sign for love. I'm just not sure what it is! I've looked online, and there seems to be a lot of variation. I was hoping someone could show me what it is for sure. Thanks!

internet friend (it's long a bit)...thanks much for any answer ~?

hello,i've got an internet friend for about 6 years,we are from different country.the last 2 years he was so serious about me as he said ,he planned to meet me 2 times, for some reasons ,he didnt ..i was trying to understand him,and his reasons also it sound logical,..as far as i planned long ago,for moving to U.S.i told him i will have an interview in embassy of usa in abu dhabi, this time he promised he will come to meet me seriously,in dubai..he asked about my hotel name ,and furthur he told me he booked a room and bought a ticket for airplane ( and he is so very frank in a way of his speaking ,and if he didn't have intention for meeting he wouldn't insist that much i bet) any way we were talking via email and chat until 2 days before my travel to dubai, and we were planning which places to go and what to do with eachother, and stuffs..anyway as he said his flight was in 5 pm,in friday,in same hotel as me,friday evening i was waiting in lobby and he didnt come,i asked a receptionist and she said no one booked any room with his information ,i couldnt believe how it was possible,i thought maybe he booked one hotel around mine,i started sending email ,and also called his number but it was going to messege everytime i tried..however i came back to my home country after my interview in embassy, and called him randomly, and it didn't go to messege this time, but i ended up waiting for him to answer...however now after 2 month ,from that day,i recieved nothing from him (no messege or call or email) ,and this week i found out he has another email id and he is online with this email id all the time(i didnt find this email before and i think it's new one, maybe to ignore talking with me??or maybe because of his job in selling usb and internet devices online.. idk) anyway would you think is this a good idea to send to his new id an email, and just tell all my anger to him ,and my last words to him...because i feel terrible and i think someone decieved me so bad,at least in that case i know forsure that he will read my email, and will understand he can't fool everyone without them finding out.but my friends tell me to forget about it ,it's better he thinks i don't care about him ,and they say it's nonsense anyway .thanks for any answer, and sorry for my bad english,iT'S not my native language :D

Questions About Dubai Travel Specials

Betty asks…

Woman traveling alone to Dubai?

I would like to know if I travel to Dubai, would I be expected to wear anything special as I am not Muslim. Would it be expected of me to cover my head? I am traveling alone as I dont know anyone who is going that way.
The answers are wonderful. I was so worried. Thank you

admin answers:

No! Wear what you like - its hot so keep the fabrics cool

avoid short tight and revealing clothes as you will get some unwanted attention and it it will be much appreciated as well

evening can be quite dressy so do bring a bit of bling if you are heading out

Lizzie asks…

Hi i will be travelling from Chennai to Birmingham via Dubai in Emirates. What would be my baggage allowance.?

Is there any special allowances for Students?

admin answers:

No, there's no special allowances for students. The allowance depends on your class whether is 1st class-economy class.

You can check the baggage allowance at FAQ on the www.emirates.com. Please becareful understanding what is written there.

They allow 20kg maksimum for economy class. Excess baggage allowed until 32kg (but then you have to pay for this and its expensive. Around 12 kilos since they only tolerate 20kg).

But then again it depends on the airport, if they dont carry too much passengers they usually allow you to take more than 20kg for free.

I just had a bad experience with emirates just 2 days ago. I booked a roundtrip flight from Emirates. On my departure (from asia) i can take more then 20kg for free, but when my return trip, i only allowed to take 20kg. So i had to ditched my excess baggage around 8kg ;((

to be safe, call their local call center and ask about the baggage allowance so you can be more sure how much to take with.

Enjoy your flight;))

Donna asks…

why london? whats special over there?

Am in dubai, travelling to UK next week as a tourist, so can someone tell me....
1) whats special about LONDON ?
2)what are the best places to visit ?
3)Is it the right time to visit (climatewise)?
4)How to go ireland & scotland from there?
5)Is there any sight seeing agents?
6)And last how many days you require to see in and out of london?

Appreciate if someone could help me out...

thanks in advance

admin answers:

London is a fantastic city, with so much to see. You should start off with a tour just to get yourself orientated. There are open top buses which you can pick up just about anywhere. There is also a fab bike tour which operates from Queensway which is something a bit different. The number one thing to see is probably the Tower of London where you have the crown jewels and you should also see the changing of the Guard which is taking place every other day at the moment oh and Buckingham Palace is open too.

You should spend at least four or five days in London to see all the best bits.

To get to Ireland and Scotland I'd recommend a cheap flight as it's so much quicker. There are lots of places where you can book these trips in London.

George asks…

Winter Clothes for Toronto during February?

Hello :)

I will be traveling to Toronto during the second half of February.
what type of clothing do I need to buy?
Will i need special type of boots and a special hat?
I am currently residing in Dubai and not sure there are stores over here that sell clothes suited for an extremely cold weather.
Are there outlets that sell fairly priced winter clothes @ Toronto Airport?

Thanks!

admin answers:

Do NOT buy clothes of any kind in a airport. Ridiculous prices.

Wait until you are here in Canada to buy.

Go to any shopping mall and go to a men's store. Ask the sales man to help you select some proper winter clothing, starting with a winter coat. Make sure that you point out that you are only visting Canada for a short period of time.

The three parts of the body that must be kept warm are, the feet, hands and head. The proper way to do that is to wear gloves , and a hat and good winter boots, while outside. Insulated gloves are available for about $10 CDN, a wool hat, that covers the entire head and the ears will cost $15 and a good pair of insulated winter boots will be about $80 CDN. Don't allow your self to be pushed to spend more than that, it isn't needed.

A good winter coat will be from 100 to 200 CDN dollars. Look for a windproof outer surface made of nylon, with a two layer inside, made of polar fleece synthetic fabric, with a hood and a 3/4 length body that comes down to your upper legs. Storm cuffs on the sleeves, to keep out the wind, and a two way zipper that allows you to open it to keep from getting TOO warm.

Remember that in winter all of our public buildings are heated to 21 C , so when you go into a building, take OFF the coat, and carry it on your arm, to keep from being too hot. Take of the hat and gloves, too, and put them in the pockets of the coat.

Look at what others are wearing each day, and check the TV weather reports ( in the early morning ) to learn what the day's temperatures will be later on. Find out what the "wind chill factor " will be. Wind chill is what "it feels like " when you combine the wind speed with the actual air temperature that day. Wind chill can hurt you, as it attacks exposed skin, and freezes it. Keep that in mind.

Ruth asks…

Are all food in Emirates Airlines Halal (in islamic condtion)?

Im going to travel in Emirates Airlines in economy class. I was wondering its an airline from middle east however dubai is high class. Are all the meals halal or do I have to order special muslim meal?
Thanks

admin answers:

The food is halal but alcohol is also served optionally. That's the case with Qatar Airlines, Gulf Air too. And I know Kuwait Airways doesn't serve alcohol.

I'm telling you this because I've found seen some folks get irked when their food is served alongside alcohol.

Traveling alone from New york to Chennai ...scared pl z help?

Hi, I am traveling from New york to Chennai via dubai emirates. This is my first time travelleing alone and there is a stop over in dubai for 6 hours. Also, I heard dubai has got some new terminal.I do not know what procedure I should go through there. Also, I am scared that i would miss the correct terminall and gate .(Sorry,I got anxiety disorder) Anyone who has travelled via dubai emirates to chennai from newyork (Economy Boeing 777-300ER -NY to Dubai) and (Economy Boeing 777-200/ 200ER - Dubai to chennai) kindly give me the detailed procedure of how to do it.Thanks.

admin answers:

Most Gulf working Indians take the route via Dubai to India.
As soon as you get down from the NY Flight, walk through with everyone who are transit passengers. You would find a help desk for transit passengers, most probably manned by Indians. They would tell you the departure terminal and direction. Take a walk up too the terminal and once you find your terminal you would gain all the confidence. Walk back to the refreshment stalls , have some thing to eat and walk along the duty free shops. You would find plenty of your compatriots there! Dubai Duty free shops are quite big and spend time till one hour to your departure. Talk to your folks for a few minutes. Added confidence! Get back to the departure terminal and wait calmly.
Unaccompanied young adults also travel this way!

Emirates arrives and leaves from terminal 3 only. Just leave one plane, do some shopping in the Duty Free and board back on the next plane. That's it.

admin answers:

I don;t think youi mentioned which Terminal for Option 1, but I would go with Option 2 and then you will not be so stressed and it will not matter too much if your flight from Dubai to LHR is slightly delayed.

There is quite a long distance between T1 and T5, by road.

Questions About Dubai Travel Ban

Thomas asks…

how to find my passport has travel ban for dubai. because i resign my job 3 months ago. now i got new offer.?

how to find my passport has travel ban for dubai. because i resign my job 3 months ago. now i got new offer from dubai. i think my passport has 6months travel ban. i cant see any identification on passport. when i resign my friends told me this company is put ban for all staff. please any one give me idea for that.

admin answers:

You did NOT receive any travel ban for resigning your job. You received a 6 months work ban which means you still can obtain a visit visa and during a work ban you also can take employment at any Free Zone.

Your future employer can apply for your new work permit already and 6 months after your visa cancellation date you can start working in the UAE again.

The work ban isn't stamped in the passport, it's just something you are suppose to know.

Carol asks…

if i had a travel ban in dubai and i am going to another country but i will transit in dubai can they hold me?

i failed to pay my credit card.can they send me to prison?

admin answers:

Yes you will be jailed on the spot. The UAE belongs to the countries which require Advance Passenger Information which covers details such as your passport/identity card details all to be provided before your flight leaves. Means, UAE border control will know in advance that you plan to transit through the UAE and not going through Immigration won't protect you. Police will wait right at the gate where you'll leave the plane.

Linda asks…

How do i know if i have i travel ban exit from dubai airport?

admin answers:

The immigration checks your passport & visa number if its flagged , they do that for everyone , if you are banned it will show every where you exit or enter UAE.

Ruth asks…

are credit cards company are giving a travel ban in dubai?

admin answers:

Credit card companies have no authority to issue a travel ban!

Your friends may have received a temporary work ban only. You were deported for committing a crime and aren't able to enter the UAE anymore. No ban lifting fees for these cases.

It will depend on where in the USA you want to go. I am partial because I have friends who work for Emirates so I say Emirates is the best and have many non stops to the USA.
All are good airlines. I flew Virgin many years ago out of Heathrow to Newark and had a very pleasant flight. Entertainment was light years ahead of the competition at the time.

Is it relatively safe to travel to Dubai alone?

I am a 36 year old American female. I have never traveled overseas and am thinking of making a solo "getaway" in March but am kind of nervous to do this, but, don't want to waste my money starting somewhere small. Any thoughts on if this would be a good place?

admin answers:

Hi there,

A cousin of mine has been living in Dubai since ages, and a few days back i was talking to him about visint Dubai now as the Shopping Festival is going on When the topic of shopping till midnight came up, he said Dubai is very safe for females to go shopping around alone all day too!

Dubai is known to be a very safe place in terms of Crimes, but as always, there are some rules that you have to follow, which applies even to your own home. So if you follow those basic steps that you take in your home, you will be safe here too!

Please take these precautions when in dubai at any cost! :
*avoid travelling in "unofficial taxis"! There are many such in Dubai, but always use the official Taxis to go anywhere.
*While you can go to bar or a nightclub and have a few drinks don’t get drunk. The police arrest drunks and throw them in jail no questions asked.

Paul asks…

How much money should i save and how safe is it to travel from London to Bahrain?

Then to Dubai.

admin answers:

Expenses, depends on what is your travel plan but as an average traveler and living in an average three star hotels and normal traveling cost other then airfare you should be spending around 100 british pounds or around 600 UAE Dirhams or around 165 US dollars per day. This will cover your costs of accommodation and normal traveling with some food expenses also.
For the safe traveling part traveling to Bahrain and dubai from any where in the world is as safer as traveling to countries like Germany, Netherlands, Belgium or any other safe country or may more safer then those countries. But general precaution and common sense is always required.

B

admin answers:

How should anybody know what you call shopping? How should anybody know how much money you have?

To be safe, just bring your credit/debit card and take out as much money as you need. You'll find Atm maschines all over.

Your expenses for shopping will depend on what an where you are shopping. You can i.e. Go to the souq and get a purse for Dhs 20 or visit Emirates Mall and get one for Dhs 2000. If you would more specific it would be easier to give you a right answer.
