Questions About Dubai Travel Tourism

Donald asks…

Need a Tourism issue in Dubai.?

For my Travel and Tourism class, i was allowed to choose a country or region that has a travel issue (ie. Sex tourism, garbage disposal from tourists, culture interference from tourists.) I need some help.

admin answers:

Issues available:

1. Sex tourism: whether you like it or not, Dubai is the centre of sex tourism in the region with prostitutes from all over the world, including, believe it or not, the UK and the US (I mean white women, not "ethnic Americans and British!).

2. Socio-cultural issues: affect of increased tourst numbers on the culture and on the social status

3. Negative perceptions of tourists by the UAE nationals.

4. Relation of tourism with neo-colonialsim; check out scholarly and specialised books and you will find abundance of information.

5. Economic effect: most people think that tourism is a great economy, but actually in the Third World (UAE included) it's very fragile. Example: since most tourists are from the west (80 to 90%) and now there is an economic recession in the west, tourists will no longer come, which will compromise the economy very much.

6. Tourists overtaking places from the local population: how many UAE families do you find on the Beach in Jumeirah?

7. Commodification of the local heritage.

8. An important issue is the fact only 700 UAE nationals work in the tourism industry in Dubai, which has thousands of workers. In other industries it's around 9% and in government authorities it's more. That means that the tourism industry is the least industry that benefits the locals, so it really does not seem to make sense to them.

I can give you more, but I think you can find quite a lot here.

Very useful books to check out would be:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tourism-Sustainability-Development-Globalization-Third/dp/0415414024/ref=wl_it_dp?ie=UTF8&coliid=I3444NW5BJWWXQ&colid=21ID5NA6KJRS9

Best places to work in with less headache are the 5 star hotels and equivalent or with major airlines.
Try to approach them directly, check their websites for vacancies and newspapers for available jobs
However, you need to be present in the country in case they call you for interview.
Newspapers websites are

For hotels try to google them

Questions About Dubai Travel Job Opportunities

Paul asks…

Residency Visa rules for Dubai?

My boyfriend has a job opportunity in Dubai that his considering. He wants me to go with him and so we're trying to find out information on Residency Visas. My boyfriend will obtain residency through his new role as his company will sponsor him but we are confused as to whether I would be able to be sponsored by him taking into account we are not married??

Or would I need to apply for residency myself once I have a job in Dubai?? If I would need to arrange myself then would I need to have a job and my Visas arranged before I travel??

It's all very confusing!!!

Thanks in advance

admin answers:

The rules are very simple.

A boyfriend can not sponsor you.
A husband has to make Dhs 3.ooo and paid housing or Dhs 4.500 without housing.
You can not apply yourself for a residence visa without working in the UAE.
If you come here on a visit visa and get lucky to land a job, your company (sponsor) will arrange the residence visa.

You have three possibilities:
1. You get married and your husband sponsors you.
2. You come here on a visit visa which will be good for 60 days, renew it for another 30 days (Dhs 500) or go on a visa run.
3. You land a job here while on a visit visa. Then all other visa related costs will be on your company.
4. Look for a suitable job opening while still outside the UAE, get hired, have travel expenses paid by the company and enter the UAE on the right entry permit and be in a better position to negotiate a better salary package than being hired here under a local contract.

Right now all the rules might sound confusing, but they are really simple. By coming here on a visit visa to be with your boyfriend and then looking for a job, please be aware that it is considered illegal to live together without being married. In Dubai nobody cares unless somebody complains. Then the Authorities have to take action. Be aware of watchmen and neighbours depending where you live and what Nationalities live in the same building.

If you have any more questions you can email me any time.

Take care.

Steven asks…

Should I go to Dubai to seek employment on a tourist visa?

I don't know anyone in Dubai, don't have any connections. I'm an American IT professional and don't speak Arabic, and single. I have heard of opportunities with great pay, and intrigued by the nature of the life. Should I secure a job interview before I travel, or go blindly and spend perhaps a month there, looking at the classifieds. The latter seems risky.

admin answers:

Hi,

sure you could come here on a visit visa, stay for 90 days and look for a job - but if it doesn't work, it was just wasting money.

Here the "good" jobs with a good salary package you only get through connections or recruitment agencies. With you being an American wanting a great salary I see one problem. Indians are great IT professionals, too, but asking for a lower salary which is still much more than back in their homecountry. And these guys are doing a good job!

Great pay you can expect getting employed by an American or European company which mostly offer beside the salary also housing, transportation and health care. This will make life in Dubai much more easier if you want to keep your living standard.

Here are some links to check out. You also can mail them your resume and then you will get a notice when a suitable opening comes up

Nancy asks…

My parents want me to move school practically to the other side of the world?

heeey:) so basically my dads job makes him travel around a lot; he works away so it's normally just me and my mom; but one time we got the opportunity to be a family again, and we moved to Dubai. I was about 10 and was leaving in middle school; I was so upset to leave all the friends I had made. When I went to my new school it was so hard; the education was different the people were different and i found it just so stressful there was no out of school activities however I made friends and got on with life. Then I was told 2 years later I was moving back to my home town because my dad got a job where we couldn't all go:) I was so happy to come back but sad to leave everyone behind. So today I'm told that my dad is getting a new job and we can move to bahrain. I'm in high school now and I have the best friends, best social life, best everything I could ever wish for, im happy at my school and I don't wanna leave; it was so hard for me leaving when I was 10 and I don't wanna go through it all again:(
Please help me xx

admin answers:

You look older than high school, if that's you in your avatar.

Sandra asks…

Please help me improve my response & I'll give you best answer!?

For a childcare job on a cruise ship, I have to answer an application. They're asking- Why do you want to work on a cruise ship (can you make my response sound shorter & less cliche?)

I am looking for new experiences and opportunities in life as well as a possible career in cruise line work. Having lived in Dubai previously I was surrounded by a multi cultural environment and I took pride in learning from a variety of people with different backgrounds. As a sociable person, I enjoy and feel I work my best within a close knit environment. I believe that working on a cruise ship would combine these interests as well as giving me the chance to conventionally travel to places I would not have had the opportunity to visit otherwise.

admin answers:

I think it sounds rather good personally. The only real comment that I have is that the following sentence sounds a bit contradictory.

"As a sociable person, I enjoy and feel I work my best within a close knit environment."

Otherwise you have a better than average response offering honesty and diversity. Nice.

Questions About Dubai Travel October

Michael asks…

What do i wear to a wedding at the Ritz-Carlton in Dubai?

I am traveling to Dubai at the end of October for a wedding. The wedding is being held at the Ritz-Carlton. I am unsure what I should and what I am allowed to wear?

admin answers:

It depends on whos getting married.
If the people getting married are locals (or come from anywhere in the gulf), then it will probably be a traditional U.A.E wedding. The women usually wear any formal dress or suit they like, with the traditional black abaya over it, and when they get there they take the abaya off. (the weddings are separated.. Men alone and women alone).

If the couple getting married are from anywhere else around the world (not from the gulf), then you can wear any dress you like. The weddings are mixed.

Because the wedding is in the Ritz, then you should probably wear something really classy and elegant.. A long silk gown, with high heels, and lots of jewlery(dont over do it though.. A watch, necklace, average sized earrings, and a bracelet or two will do it)

Joseph asks…

Mandy asks…

With Swiss Air to Dubai?

Anyone who travelled with Swiss Air to Dubai? How's the service and comfort?
They offering Amsterdam - Dubai return ticket for 400 euro all inclusive on certain dates in October/November. Would it be suitable for my 21 year daughter?
Edit "H": No,I didn't and that's why I was wondering if you did got my email 2 weeks ago. Can you resend and I will reply instandly, because you should know something.
@"H": Lufthansa 750 euro? KLM and Emirates are on some dates cheaper then that. Approx 650-700 euro. Even GARUDA is good option for that amount. Very cheap is TAROM from Romania through Boekarest, but I don't know them.

admin answers:

Hi,

just don't worry about any service and/or comfort on a 530 hrs non stop flight for this price. I paid Eur 750 just 2 months ago taking Lufthansa (and that was a promotion). Swiss Air just can't be worse than Lufthansa. Go for it! Sorry I don't have any personal experience byside taking Swiss Air city hoppers from Munich to Basel. I was satisfied.

Ps. Did you get my email?

Some questions about Dubai?

I am about to travel there and live for the next year for school. I was just wondering. When did Dubai really begin it's building boom? Also is the internet monitored and certain sites blocked? I know in Iran I wasn't able to access Twitter for a number of days... finally how are the people towards young Americans? Thank you so much.

admin answers:

The U.A.E. Has always been a competitive and dramatically advancing growing country. The construction boom has been on for the last 30 years or more. Real estate and Construction make up most of Dubai. Internet is certainly monitored and censored here. Expect several top websites to be blocked here. Many social networking websites are still open for access. Twitter works here :-) You will meet people from different walks of life and diverse nationalities here- there are 125+ different nationalities in such a small country. In school too - the diversity will be obvious. Nobody is outwardly negative towards Americans, but if you are American expect to make BIG, and I mean BIG adjustments (I've lived in America for a long while during school ;-) . But, you will find a few Americans to mix with. The Iranian community is vast and u can meet many Iranians here. Good Luck!

Carol asks…

Question about travelling to Dubai?

So I might be going to Dubai, but i'll have to travel alone. I'd be staying with a friend and his mum out there. Since I'm only 15 (probs be 16 when I fly) do you think they wouldn't let me in as i'm not staying with family either. Cuz i've heard of some Muslim countries where women can only travel in if they are going to visit family or as part of a tour.

Also, would it be easier to travel on my british or libyan passport?

Thanks in advance,

Jamilla :)
@ WildMan Willy - no lol i didn't meet them online, its just a friend who moved out there a couple years ago. :)

admin answers:

Make sure you know this friend good. I hope its not somebody you met on the internet cuz they might be lieing to you. But anyway if you feel the need to travel there you should have no problem with a passport british or libyan.
Dubai lets visitors into their country, you don't have to be a relative of a native good luckkk

alright jamilla thats a good thing!!!!!!

I am thinking about going for a short while to Dubai for vacation and I'm wondering if I need a vise to do that. I ahve the passport of the European Union. Many thanks in advance, every help is very apprechiated.

It depends from which country of the EU you are from. Please visit the link giving below and see which nationalities are able to obtain a 30 days visa up on arrival.

All others have to apply for a visa in advance through a travel agent, hotel or Emirates Airline.

Your EU passport just states that your country belongs to the EU and hasn't any effect on visa rules outside the EU.
